I am an Assistant Professor and Director of Undergraduate Programs at the Department of Entomology at Rutgers University. I teach classes both at the undergraduate and graduate level. My research interests are focused on the molecular mechanisms that underlie insect behavior. My topics of research cover a wide variety of insects and questions. I currently run the Teaching Excellence in Entomology for graduate students.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Statement on DEI
While insects themselves display extraordinary diversity, like many scientific fields Entomology as a discipline often falls short of representing the diversity of people who perform valuable research. As a lab we do not ignore this and make constructive steps to make entomology an accessible and equitable environment for all. The Hawkings laboratory does not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual preference, religion, socioeconomic circumstances, etc. We strive to provide an inclusive and positive environment for students to learn and grow and succeed academically and professionally. DEI Initiatives Members of the lab strive to continually educate ourselves on social issues that exist within our field. As a lab, we engage in conversations about how to progress and confront issues of bias, racism, prejudice and work to promote equality. We acknowledge it is our responsibility to increase diversity and equal representation to provide an inclusive environment to everyone. DEI Positions Held by Lab Members Chloe Hawkings: DEI committee member department of entomology, DEI faculty advising committee, ESA organizer for women and allies breakfast at the 2021 Entomological Society of America's annual meeting in Denver, CO Marisa Shinal: DEI chair Undergraduate club in entomology 2021 Laura Rademacher: DEI chair Undergraduate club in entomology 2019 - 2021 |

To search for unasked questions, plus questions to put to already acquired but unsought answers, it is vital to give full play to the imagination. That is the way to create truly original science.
